TENORM Measurements Solutions

BENEFITS

Guard Against Inappropriate Disposal

Proof of Compliance for TENORM Licensed Facilities

  • Fast and accurate measurements provide real-time data to landfill operators on what is being disposed in their landfill.
  • TENspec™ scanning measurements of material used in conjunction with plastic scintillator-type measurement devices prevents waste generators from “hiding” inappropriate materials in a shipment.
  • NDDoH approved method provides validated results to make acceptance or rejection decisions of waste materials easy.
  • Provides defensible data for acceptance of non-regulated NORM containing wastes, for example, exploration waste.

Ensure Compliance with DOT Transport Requirements

  • Fast and accurate measurements provide real-time data to determine whether the waste exceeds DOT transport limits prior to material leaving the generator’s site.
  • Real-time results provide precise radioactivity information to carry with the shipment in case of emergency.
  • “Whole load” measurement of material prevents waste generators from “hiding” materials that exceed DOT limits in an otherwise acceptable shipment.
  • DOT enforcement can use the technology to ensure compliance at various locations, i.e. state lines or ports-of-entry.
  • Fast and accurate measurements provide real-time data allowing operators to make a go/no-go decision for acceptance.
  • TENspec™ scanning measurements of material provides more accurate quantification of entire waste load by measuring a much larger sample as compared to the desktop or laboratory methods.
  • NDDEQ approved method means no additional testing for radium is required.
  • Provides precise data measurements that can be used in modeling Total Radium content of an entire disposal site.
  • Provides defensible data for acceptance of non-regulated NORM containing wastes, for example, exploration waste.

Spread and Scan Allows for Full Characterization of Any Load.

  • Allows for use of low-resolution gamma spectroscopy or possibly exposure rate supplemented with information derived from other measurements or process knowledge to determine total radium concentration.
  • Material is deposited on a pad, similar to a long driveway, where a detector is moved by monorail hoist at a reproducible height over the length of the pile to acquire measurement data.
  • The low-resolution spectral data is compared with a composite sample measured by HPGe to provide quality control of the low-resolution measurement.
  • Spreading the load and using low-resolution equipment provides a low-cost,  low-risk measurement that effectively removes any sampling inaccuracy.

Future Development with Patent Pending Re-Entrant Tube Geometry will Provide More Accurate Measurement of Highly Variable Filter Socks

  • Re-entrant tube array (pending NDDEQ approval) provides more accurate measurement of Total Radium contained in highly variable filter socks. Radium concentration can vary 100% within a single waste bin.
  • Multiple measurement points within a roll-off container provide for an extremely accurate average measurement that is more representative of the radioactivity contained within the container as a whole.
  • When NDDEQ approves the method, it will allow for disposal in-state or at lower-limit facilities nearer the point of generation yielding significant savings to the generator when considering total disposal costs.
  • Significantly reduces sampling uncertainty inherent with quantifying radioactivity in used filter socks.
